Courtyard and balconies

Except for a few winter months, when it is covered with a weatherproof canopy, the courtyard and balconies are our living space. The plunge pool (covered when required for the protection of small children) is deep enough for a dip and has seating to facilitate a languid drink.

The garden on the roof provides a wonderful view over Fez, with an elevated shaded area and space for discreet sunbathing. There is little to compare with sitting out there in a spring sunset as the swallows wheel and the call to prayer echoes around you.  There is a small kitchen and a barbecue and full lighting for night-time and evening use, with garden furniture. Planting is in both traditional pots and large built-in planters, stocked with scented geranium, rosemary, mint (for Fassi tea) and bougainvillea; a vine gives us shade but never enough grapes. Our little orange trees yield just enough fruit to provide marmalade.  The roof kitchen provides quick access to a drinks fridge and a second cooker to supplement evening barbecues on the roof.

We normally eat in the dining room only in the depths of winter. The kitchen is in traditional style, but is designed to cater full meals for up to 12 people. Culinary and breakfast staples are kept in stock.

The grand high-ceilinged salon is equipped with comfortable seating and a large fireplace for snugging up in winter. Above the Salon is the mezzanine 'library', also a convenient working area. We have a modest collection of relevant books, including a range of local guide books. Find the full list in Our "Library".

The master bedroom can be found at one end of the balcony on the first floor, behind impressive, beautifully restored doors and a heavy curtain to provide warmth in the winter. It is a large, high-ceilinged room with air conditioning a super-king size bed and additional single bed up on a mezzanine platform. The en-suite bathroom is traditionally tiled throughout and complete with a toilet, bath and Moroccan style copper sink.

The second bedroom sits opposite the master at the other side of the balcony, with the same restored doors, curtain, tiling high ceilings and other traditional features, as well as air conditioning. It has a king-size bed and en-suite mezzanine bathroom at one end, with tiled shower and sink open to the room and a separate toilet cubicle.

Omar's Room - named after the caretaker who would sleep here nightly during the house's restoration - is a traditional mezzanine bedroom accessed half-way up the main staircase. With a double bed and en-suite bathroom with a bath, it is a versatile room - perfect for a couple, single adult or one or two children.

The Kids' Room

The Kids' Room is (as the name suggests) perfect for two or three children, or an adult and one or two children: it features twin beds, one of which is custom-made to fit the space and is therefore wide enough for two children, but a little short for an adult! Its window overlooking the courtyard makes it a light space despite the lower ceilings. The bathroom is next door, with a basin, toilet and shower.
